Boo! Scare Me Straight To May! A German Halloween...

Comments
Boo! Happy Halloween! Hmm, if I could have one wish for this holiday, it would be for someone to scare me straight to the day when Don will be home from this deployment for good! That's totally possible, right? Totally possible :)  I hope that you all are out gathering delicious candy while wearing cutesy costumes right now! What did you dress up as this year?  I was myself.  Here in Germany, the festivities {as far as I'm concerned} have ended, the lights are out, the doors locked & my rouladens closed up.  Wait, they've been that way pretty much all night!  Why?

Church for me is at 3:30 each Sunday {we have to share the Post Chapel!}, & tonight we had dinner afterward.  I didn't get home until later, so I didn't bother handing out candy this year.  Plus, since I live in a German neighborhood with only a handful of other Americans, almost all of our Trick-Or-Treaters aren't American.  Let's just say that they take the whole "trick or treat" saying seriously.  Vandalism has been known to happen.  When I didn't open the door once tonight, I heard a bit of commotion from the crowd of German teenagers outside.  Let's hope my front porch looks the same in the morning.

So inside I stayed, watching Mad Men, knitting, snuggling with my dogs, & all the while thinking of my sweetheart who is still en route to his final destination & tired from the lack of a quiet place to sleep.  Oh, I want him home again.

I'm ready for that scare now!  Is this deployment over?  BOO!

An Unexpected Passenger

Comments
I never thought that one day I would have a cute little non-English speaking German Grandma in the passenger seat of my little green Mini Cooper, but that did indeed happen the other day!  I was driving out of our German neighborhood on a chilly rainy morning when I saw in the road ahead this little woman, waving at me!  At first, I thought, "Hmm, maybe she wants me to slow down," mind you I wasn't driving too fast!  Of course ;)  But even after my slowing, she continued to wave!  As I got closer to her, she slowly walked over to the car, so I rolled down my window.

Jumbled in between a slew of German sentences, I somehow made out that she wanted me to drive her to the town's grocery store!  Without a hesitation at all, she made her slow entrance into my car & off we went!  On & on she spoke to me in German, while all I could do was grin at her in reply!  She then said, "Sie sprechen nicht Deutsches?" {You do not speak German?}, which made me grin even bigger & tell her, "Nein!"  We both laughed & said goodbye {Tschuss!} as she got out of my Mini in the local grocery store parking lot.  As I drove away, watching her walk slowly into the store, I smiled & thought, "That was a first!"  It was a pretty cute way to start my rainy Autumn day!

Happy Friday, everyone!  I hope that your day is fabulous, a great start to the weekend!  Make sure to stop by tomorrow for our weekly Saturday Around The World blog party!  If you join in, you'll be entered for a chance to be my weekly featured blog!  ♥  Now, I'm off to cook some dinner {how cute is Audrey Hepburn in this photo?!  I won't look nearly as cute while I'm cooking!}, then knitting & watching Letters to Juliet.  I'm excited to see it!  Hooray for Netflix!

Pretty Sleepy Sunday + Saturday Around The World!

Comments
At 3:30 PM, it is still only 50 degrees here in beautiful Bavaria. The sun has finally shown his face, but he hasn't added any warmth to our day! Still, I bundled up {out comes one winter coat!} & took Layla & Lucius on a thirty minute walk through the paths & fields behind our house. Beautiful, isn't it?! Now, they are fast asleep & I'm warm inside. I do think I'll go find my slippers, though! ♥

Don't forget to enter your blog in my new Saturday Around The World listing for a chance to be featured here on {Amanda & Don}!  You can enter until Tuesday @ midnight EST.  I'm having so much fun reading the comments so far & seeing photos for those who have participated!  You ladies are truly lovely & deserve these new followers that you are getting!  Yay!
And on another note, today I am the guest blogger over at the wonderful {Life of Meg} blog! A Coat In Summer?!

Comments
My brother & I crossed off one of his Germany "To-Dos" today: we went shopping at Jack Wolfskin! If you haven't heard of it, don't be alarmed. This company is strictly European! Think of it as Europe's version of North Face...  Fantastic quality outdoor gear, coat & jackets, gloves & backpacks, etc.  It's what you see the Germans wearing, but if you have it on the States, well... people will wonder where you did your fabulous shopping!  Ok...so they're just jackets...but their logo is a paw print, & so to me this brand is extra awesome!  Can't you just see me, a Great Dane on a leash in each hand, out walking through the German countryside while wearing my new Jack Wolfskin?!  Well, not now in this 94 degree heat, of course!  Phew!

My brother got a jacket that is very similar to mine {with the paw print on the back--it could belong to Lucius!} & a wind jacket too.  Scratch this off the list!  But for now, my new jacket {which I got in a dark chocolate brown} will have to wait for Autumn...  Oh, that sounds so nice right now.  Is it winter yet?!  I'm ready for snow instead of this wretched heat!

Cooling Down With Bavarian Beer

Comments
Oh wow, it's hot. Ninety-two degrees, no air conditioning, a house filled with fans, & it's still too hot!  Between the dogs & my brother, who is still getting over his jet lag, this was quite the napping house today!  I sure do miss the grand old USA & its love of AC.  I'm still boggled by the fact that Germans have self-service kiosks at McDonald's & sensors to tell you where the closest open parking spot is in a parking garage, yet there is no AC!  Alright, you get the point...

This is where you'll find me!
My brother & I made a trip to a local Getränkemärkte {drink market!} yesterday to pick out some beer--a necessary shopping trip for any visitor to Germany!  Or for someone who has lived here for a year :)  These stores are filled to the brim with different types of beer from all over the country, rows & rows of containers filled with deliciousness!  It's difficult to pick which kind to try, but the prices make it easy to try more than one!  We picked two from the same brewery, a Pils & a Hefeweizen!  Both are light beers, refreshing & cool.

Keepin' cool, Deutschland style.
None for Lucius, though...  He'll just have to keep napping to stay cool!
Sit in your American air conditioned houses & think of me!  Oh, I'm jealous of you all!  Stay cool, dearies ♥

Breaks, Crepes, & Pink Polish

Comments
Welcome, my fabulous new readers! And hello again, my fabulous old pros! Thank you all for your comments; they call make me smile! Question: are the photos in this post Too Big?! Do tell! I don't want to overwhelm!

I'm taking a little break from my daily Italy travel posts{just one day...don't worry!} to do something a bit more simple.  Less writing, more pictures!  I always like it when I show up to one of my favorite blogs to find pretty pictures!  Do they brighten your day too?!

Ok, the Festival wasn't quite like this...but the costumes were quite similar!  And there were horses!
I spent the afternoon with new friends, enjoying a nearby town's 600th Anniversary celebration in the form of a Medieval Festival!  Yes, you heard me!  Complete with knights & jesters, kings & queens, peasants & lepers!  Fake lepers, of course!  We had quite a time shouting the German cheers along with the crowd {still not sure what we were saying!} & eating crepes with fresh strawberries!  Mmm!  I also had one of my favorite German drinks: the radler.  Now, trust me...this is good.  It's light beer mixed with lemon flavored mineral water or Sprite.  So refreshing!  Mix one for yourself if you're interested!  You'll thank me :)  And I'll post pictures of this unique festivity later in the week!

Do you like Jane Austen?  Period piece movies?  Do yourself a favor & rent this gem!
Tonight, I'm watching the romantic girlie movie Bright Star, about the three year romance between the famous 19th century poet John Keats & Fanny Brawne, while painting my fingers & toes.  Light pink with sparkles.  {OPI's "Make Love" with "Princesses Rule" on top}  What a simple way to brighten my world...

Any other OPI lovers out there?!
Oh, along with the fact that Don & I were able to talk again tonight!  Even though it was just chatting, no voice or video, it's still so reassuring to communicate with him.  It makes it feel like we're somehow closer together.  Now, that, my dears, is what really brightens my world!  ♥

And next time that I say a post will have "less writing", well, don't believe me...

Thunder & Lightning

Comments
The weather men in Bavaria are probably getting tired of talking about all of this rain, but I am loving it! While people I know are dreaming of the sun & wishing for its speedy return, I'm snuggled up inside with my doggies, my tea, & a good book {which now happens to be The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova}.  Last night, however, I got even more of what I love: a fantastic thunder & lightning storm, complete with a torrential downpour!  Ooh, how I enjoyed it.  I was like a little kid while trying to fall asleep, a silly grin slapped across my face as the lightning lit up our room, even through our rouladens {metal German blinds}.  Don said to me, "Try not to giggle too much.  I'm sleeping!"  hehe

At one point, I started counting the seconds between the lightning flash & the thunder.  Four seconds.  We were close!  And I even counted a thunder rumble that lasted 30 seconds!

It was a very cozy night.  I'm hoping for more!  Do you like thunder storms?!  I must say that Layla & Lucius don't mind them, thank goodness!  Can you imagine having two terrified 120 pound dogs to take care of?  The only sign of fear was when they were out in the yard & the thunder scared Lucius enough that he ran between the bench & the house.  How he fit back there, I don't know!

Ah, The Language Barrier

Comments
Today's mission, whether or not I choose to accept it, is to deal with our problem car that is still sitting in the parking lot of the Inspection Building.  What happened?!, you may ask.  Well, it failed miserably on it's inspection test last week & was slapped with a sticker reading "Unsafe To Operate."  Yeah, it was a nice day.

I just made a phone call to our Auto Shop of choice, & here is what the conversation sounded like:

Lady @ The Auto Shop:  "Hallo!  *Insert name of shop.*

Me:  "Hallo!  Spreken ze English?"

Lady @ The Auto Shop:  "...No."

*insert a few laughs from both of us, along with a little silent pause from me as I attempt to think of a plan.  I couldn't think of a plan.*

Me:  "...Ok!  Tschuss!"

Lady @ The Auto Shop:  "Tschuss!"

This is going to be fun.  Cross your fingers for me, please!

"When It Rains..."

Comments
So remember that awful morning I was having yesterday? Well, it turned into an awful day. But I've decided this about bad days: at some point, it just becomes funny.  After getting flashied by the German speed camera while passing a slow-moving semi, after having a bit of a SNAFU at the gas station on Post, & after driving around Post for an hour trying to find the car inspection building just to discover that it was surrounded by construction without any obvious way in, I came home to re-coop.

I called Don to update him on the inspection building & ended up telling him about my ticket too...  I was so worried that he would be mad at me!  Only because I was mad at myself, I think.  Of course, he wasn't upset!  He knows that's not like me.  Plus, he's my sweetie :)  And the funny thing?  He said that most likely, I won't even receive the ticket for a few months.  By then, maybe I will have forgotten?

But my day wasn't over.  I really needed to get our '94 BMW to the car inspection building.  Here in Germany, when you renew your vehicle registration each year you also have to have your vehicle inspected.  Now, this isn't like any inspection in the States.  The Germans are serious about their cars!  For instance, your car could fail inspection if one of your turn signal lights needed replaced or if you didn't have a First Aid kit in the car!

Our registration expires while we're in Croatia next month, so all this needs taken care of now.  I called the inspection building & a nice German man gave me very vague directions.  Back to Post I went, making sure not to pass anyone this time!  {And the movable speed camera was gone by now.  I told you they don't stay in one place very long!}  After another 45 minutes driving around Post, I discovered that I had to take a strange dirt road through a little forest in order to reach the back of the inspection building.  But there was a silver lining: I was the only one there!  Hooray!  Hallelujah!  I wouldn't have to wait!

As I sat in the garage, watching the Beemer be lifted up & inspected, I texted Don, "Hallelujah!  I'm here & I'm the only one!  The hardest part is over!"  And not two minutes later, the nice German mechanic looks at me & says, "You cannot drive this car."  I actually laughed aloud & replied, "You're teasing me, right?"  He said no.

Now it was all just funny.  There was a hole somewhere under the car that was leaking an excessive amount of engine oil.  I crept under the lift to have him show me, & sure enough, there was a space about 2 feet by 2 feet that was covered in oil, & a puddle was very obvious at my feet.  "No driving."

"I guess I'll have to call my husband!"  And he laughed!  He was getting a kick out of me, but felt bad for me too.  The German man in the office let me use the phone there {"It's free!"} & Don could not believe the news.  Plus, of course, he was out in the field shooting for the day so there was no way he could up & leave to come get me.  He did tell me, though, that he'd make sure I had a really yummy dinner!  I told that to the mechanic, along with the news that Don was shooting in the field, & he grinned again & said, "Can I come for dinner?  I will cook!"  I said, "Absolutely not!  You're the one who gave me this bad news!"  More German laughter, & he placed a sticker on the car windshield that read in big red letters, "Unsafe To Operate."  Nice.

We arranged to leave the car there at the inspection building until we knew where to tow it to, & I walked to the library, thankful that I brought my book.  I ended up finishing it, so that counts for something!

Don had a brilliant plan: ask the inspection guys to drive the car into the ocean for us.  Or off a cliff.  We just spent €500 fixing it less than a month ago!

Now, all the troubles of yesterday morning are nothing, because by the afternoon...it was pouring.
