Basically, OPSEC means protecting important information about the military. The Internet is an incredible thing & provides an amazing way to stay in touch & to share our thoughts, but it allows anyone to read this information, even people who might use it in a harmful way. If I'm ever vague about what Don is doing, this is why. As much as I hate to say it, we are a country at war & we all need to do our part to make sure that our troops have what they need & that they are protected! I enjoy writing about my experiences as a military wife, but my husband's safety always comes first.
Here are the ten rules of OPSEC, in basic terms:
- Don’t discuss current or future destinations/ ports of call/deployment bases.
- Don’t discuss current or future operations or missions.
- Don’t discuss current or future dates and times of exercises or missions.
- Don’t discuss readiness issues and numbers.
- Don’t discuss specific training equipment.
- Don’t discuss people’s names and operations.
- Don’t speculate about current or future operations.
- Don’t spread rumors about current, future, or past operations or movements.
- Don’t assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you; he/she is.
- Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC when using email, phone, chat rooms and message boards.
So, if you wonder why I don't go on & on about my husband's job, now you know. There's a good reason! Thanks for reading this, & please... make sure that you don't have loose lips!
I have a friend who blogged about something a friend told her who had a son in the military and though she doesn't use her real name, she got a phone call asking her how she retained the information and asked her to remove it. So, you're right, better quiet than sorry!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in Germany from 1988-1991. We were there for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the first Gulf War. To this day, we still quote some of the cheesy slogans on OpSec ("Hello Boris"). We appreciate your family's sacrifice on our behalf.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, what a story! We all need to be looking out for the troops' best interest, & that is safety! If we post something we shouldn't, someone will know... It's crazy to think about, but comforting to know that there are people making sure that important information isn't up for grabs!
ReplyDeleteL3, I bet it was amazing to live here during the fall of the Berlin Wall. My husband & I haven't been to Berlin yet, but we're excited to visit there. Thank you for your thoughts ♥
Have a wonderful day! Tschuss! {Bye!}
Thanks for sharing this. I agree whole-heartedly and though I am a proud Navy wife, I don't believe in talking intricate details of his job.
